15.19. Training Time for PN/GRN Nets

Applies to: NeuralTools, all releases

Can I increase the training time for PN/GRN neural nets?

No. Training of PN/GRN nets will stop when the error is no longer statistically relevant. If the PN/GRN net trained longer, the error on the training set might decrease -- but the error on the testing set might well increase! Training of the PN/GRN net stops when NeuralTools decides further training would no longer significantly decrease training error.

For PN/GRN nets, it is not true that the longer a net is trained, the better.

For MLF nets, an increase in training time generally improves the accuracy of the net. However, if there are too many hidden nodes, the MLF net might overtrain with long training times. For that reason long training of MLF nets is only recommended in the context of Best Net Search.
